well frequent water change is a must and plenty of time to spend for your nano. here's my nano: 5g desktop made by boyu.........

i do run carbon 24/7.. dunno if it works but all my corals are doing well.

and my sun coral is dropping babies.. they are around the tank including the clam have a baby sun.. also highlighted the growth. sorry for the crappy pix, i ain't got the best camera but you get the idea!!

so If you're asking about chem warfare...maybe there is or maybe not- BUT MY CRITTERS ARE DOING WELL. And frequent wc.. i woudn't say once a week coz sometimes i do more and sometimes less. Its Whenever i feel that it needs wc then i do it.
