IMHO, you need 3 things, apart from pumps: good lighting, a chiller and a good skimmer. Bob Fenner mentioned several times how some large concrete set ups in Philippines were successful using sunlight, live rocks and NSW. Knowledge, is what is lacking to maintain and keep a healthy reef environment. Monterey Bay Aquarium's Kelp forrest biotope set up just pumps in NSW, uses a surge generator and sunlight. This giant tank is absolutely gorgeous.
