greetings RP! i was recently commissioned by the owner of a foreign reef site to fabricate a light rack for his aqua illumination SOL LED lighting. after a couple of days of discussing the design, we came to this...

lights @ ~2" above the tank's rim...


lights @ ~12" above the tank's rim...


the rack will be mounted at the back...


and the 50 gal tank...


...the arched braces will be cut from 3/4" plywood and will be coated with epoxy for moisture protection and then will be painted black. the led rack will be fabricated from 1" aluminum square tubing.

on to the build...

i made a template for the arched braces using an illustration board and started tracing on the plywood...


and the cut pieces...


...since i started out late today, the braces will be assembled tomorrow. will post the updates by then. thanks for viewing.

i almost forgot that i started a thread here... anyway, here are the updates...

prior to the assembly, the arms were grounded all at the same time to achieve identical sizes...


since this is going to carry some weight, i used epoxy and screws to assemble the arms (instead of wood glue) for a stronger structure.


getting ready to grind the edges...


after the noise and the mess of grinding, the main arms were coated with epoxy putty for moisture protection. slots were also cut to give way for the horizontal braces that will join the 2 arms...


prior to drilling the holes for the screw, the rack arm was fitted between the main arms for better accuracy...


then drilled...




next is the center slot...


the center slots were also coated with epoxy putty...


i got the fabricated aluminum rack this morning...


assembled and dry-fitted...


after the assembly, all uneven surfaces and rough edges were sanded then coated with epoxy putty again.


...i will prime this with epoxy-based primer by monday for additional moisture protection. will post updates by then. thanks for viewing.
