Daphnia/Moina as Rotifer Substitute

Postby seth » Sun Dec 09, 2012 9:40 pm

To Grahf11 and other members with a background on raising marine juvenile fishes:

Daphnia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daphnia

Moina
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moina

http://www.fao.org/docrep/003/W3732E/w3732e0x.htm

Anyone tried feeding juvenile fishes with daphnia or moina? I'm pretty sure daphnia will not survive saline conditions but it is somehow trivial if the fishes will consume them immediately.. Moina is tolerable of supersaline environments. They are cheap and easily bought. They are also nutritious and the size is appropriate for larval fishes.

Any insights?
Cheers,
Marty

Yup, FW ang daphnia. Nutrition-wise, hindi naman magkaka-deficiency. Pwede rin i-enrich yung culture by feeding selcon and chlorella/spirulina/yeast combo...

Marty

im not sure for these pero i think theyre already too big for baby clownfish, for example. i checked their sizes daphnias are around 200 microns while rotifers are usually 50 microns. probably thats a big factor kasi nutrition based, we can always use enrichments like selco and microalga.

im trying to totally eliminate bbs sa 2nd feed ng baby clowns. medyo nakakatakot lang kasi baka di kumain ng pellets e patay agad yun in 2 days.

Dang, sayang. :(

Hmmm, FW rotifers are also an option since they should be relatively easier than SW rotifers... but then again I could be wrong.

I've been thinking about this for quite sometime... plankton culture is a hell lot harder than it seems. :(

hmm after some time, saltwater rotifers are somewhat easier than nannochloropsis culturing. sa experience ko now, nagccrash lang rotifers ko because sobrang dense na. probably nauubusan ng nanno for some hours then ayun konti bigla. then i can restart it naman eh. the key is just have plenty of nanno culture in place just in case magcrash si roti. nanno naman still crashes sometimes but i believe this happens to me because i just do it in a dirty room ( bodega ). so the air there isnt too clean. fertilizer is another thing but i already use f2 formula from FAF.
