Quarantine Tank Cycling

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the purpose of "cycling" is to prepare the "biological filtration" (aka Live Rocks) to handle the bio-load of tank inhabitants.

For a bare bottom, live-rock free, quarantine tank, do you still need to "cycle"? Not sure what you will be cycling if there are no live rocks.

Additional Information:

The plan is to buy a 15-gallon tank to act as a deploy-able/move-able quarantine tank. The plan is to purchase the QT on the 2nd week of cycling the main system. This will give me something to do while the main tank is cycling.

The first batch of tank inhabitants will be placed in the QT for approx. 6 weeks for quarantine. The QT will be maintained at 1.021 SG (hyposalinity). This will kill most parasites, especially ICK.

After the first batch of fishes are transferred to the DT, the next batch of fishes will then be quarantined. This process will repeat until all desired inhabitants are quarantined and transferred to the DT.

This QT will then be emptied and stored when I'm done stocking the tank. It will be commissioned as a hospitalization tank if needed.

first of all, hyposalinity is 1.008-1.010..
most of the time, may foam filter sa QT.. this will house your bacteria.. when you QT fishes, you always watch for ammonia.. pag tumaas, WC na agad.. since limited nga yung filtration mo..

one question im still not sure of is whether the bacteria from normal salinity 1.022-.026 is the same as the bacteria in hyposalinity? anyone?

it is better to cycle but you can do without cycling.. lets say biglang nag ka problem yung reef mo, an you need to remove the livestock.. place them in a QT.. you can wait for cycling.. what others do is have a foam in the sump.. this is where bacteria grows.. malaki ang surface area ng foam.. and when a qt is needed asap, you just place this foam sa qt.. para may bacteria ka na..

for qt tank without LR, sand, ceramic rings pwede di na mag cycle basta wc at least every week or kapagumakyat na ang amonia... useful yun sera amonia check strip sa qt tank para may early warning if pataas na kahit di gaano ka accurate yun gadget.

it is also advisable to put a overhead filter with foam only... wash the foam everyday or twice a day with fresh water para it will be clean thouroughly. bacteria may form sa glass tank or sa foam itself but with frequent wc, its not important anymore. and also qt tank usually have medicines on it so bacteria is usually prevented from colonizing the system. hth
