UPS for PC's to power crucial support systems

Postby iansuy » Thu Jun 07, 2012 1:06 am

Hi all,

Has anyone tried using a typical UPS that is made for PCs to power crucial support systems during a short power outage (1 - 2 hours)?

My plan is to buy a 1000va UPS and plug the crucial support systems such as wavemakers (21w total) and pumps (50 watts) to facilitate aeration and gas exchange. Non-crucial equipments such as the T5 lights and Skimmer will be plugged-in the the "Surge protector only" outlets to not drain the battery.

Is this a good idea? Given a total draw of around ~75 watts, how long will a 1000va UPS last?

TIA!

make sure the output of the UPS when there is no power in the outlet is a quasi square wave or a pure sine wave.. if its a square wave lang, masisira yung motor mo.. pero most probably quasi square yun..

Most probably AVR lang yun... since unstable yung power lines natin sa pinas, ok maglagay ng AVR.. It helps control the input voltage of the equipment we had..

Quasi square wave is a simulated sine wave.. simulated sine wave parang halos sine wave na.. pero para mas mura yung production cost at mas madali gawin, simulated sine wave yung gingagawa nila since hindi naman kailangan kadalasan ng power supply ng PC yung pure sine wave.. ok naman ang simulated sine wave para sa mga inductive loads katulad ng motors and pumps..

@vien, power supply kasi parang major ko..

Thanks obet! Buti na lng meron tayong mga engineers dito. :D

Anyway, this UPS is rated for 20 minutes under 120 watts. Iniisip ko, kapag nag brown out, papatayin ko lahat EXCEPT yung powerheads for oxygenation and gas exchange thru surface agitation. Yung powerheads ko is rated at 6wx2. So ang estimated runtime ko for this UPS is 3.33 hours.

Question:
1. Will the powerheads, thru surface agitation, deliver the required "gas exchange" for a couple of hours?

2. Since the return pump will be turned off, the skimmer won't be able to do its job. Is it okay to run skimmerless for a couple of hours?

3. Since the return pump will be off, there will be zero flow and water movement in the sump and fuge. Will my fuge inhabitants (macroalgae and some inverts) suffer?

Thanks!

1. YEs.
2. Yes.
3. It will last longer since there are no fishes.. maybe you can add an air pump that will turn on when the power is out..
