5-gallon FOWLR by Hentist

Postby TheHentist » Thu Mar 29, 2012 11:21 pm

This is going to be my first SW tank setup. Since newb pa ako and my budget cannot fit for a reef setup, nagdecide na mag FOWLR muna ako. I'll move na sa reef kung stable ang water, got the basics down and right, and of course pag may na-ipon na ako especially for the lighting ^_^.

Image

Here is the tank that Ill be working on. Tested na siya for leaks and wala naman siyang tagas. I'll be buying the filters next week at Cartimar.

Nag-canvas na ako kanina ng nano skimmer at HOB filter.

Jebo 501 HOB filter - P210 (place lang kayo ng suggestions for another HOB basta below P300 sana ^_^)
Resun SK-05 Nano Skimmer - P400

Since FOWLR tank, I'll go with the clip type Lighting (not sure with type of bulb that it is using...)

For LS, siguro 1 shrimp, 2 snails, at 2 ocellaris clownfish.

Questions lang po.
1. Pwede ba ako maglagay ng Fanworms sa tank this size?
3. Not sure about the dimensions ng skimmer (SK-05), but kasya kaya ito sa tank ko?

i'd go for sk-300, mas mahal pero mas efficient kesa sa sk-05 (may ganyan kase ako nd im not satisfied)

for shrimp, rather get some anemone shrimp or sexy shrimp, they grown around 3/4"... good for nano tanks

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/aqua ... =3119&s=ts

just 1-2 pcs I prefer...

if you want a lighting, try T5NO 8w sa Ace hardware, 1Daylight & 1Blue... meron akong kakilala na ganyan lang gamit niya sa tank niya, ok naman corals nya, though i'n not strongly recommending this kind of lighting, but proven and tested naman, you can add some mushrooms with this lighting...

reminder: do not over stock your 5g tank, i've done that kind of setup before and dami kong nasayang na pera dahil dun...

Though I wish to have the SK-300 but very limited talaga with my budget :( . Anyway since may HOB, both the skimmer and the filter will work together na lang and the LR for biological.

having an sk-05 is like having no skimmer at all.. may nagbebenta ata ng sk-300 sa aquarium related section.. 5g is not enough for a pair of clowns.. especially when your starting out.. we do not really recommend smaller than 35g tanks for beginners kasi mahirap nga..

if your going to continue here's what i could advice..
1. just go skimmerless than use the sk-05.. with the HOB filter, clean the filter foam atleast 3x a week with tank water.. using fresh water would kill your bacteria living in the foam.. pag nag WC ka, itabi mo yung tubig na kinuha mo from the tank, use this to clean the filter..
2. try mo mag DIY LEDs for your light para pwede ka mag soft corals.. mushrooms, leathers, and zoas are good beginner zoas dahil hardy sila..
3. use a wave maker.. not just for corals, but also para hindi maipon yung detritus.. at mafilter siya ng HOB filter mo..

Salamat po sa advice. Ill go with 1 clown and a shrimp and a pair of snails. Probably I'll find a cheaper wavemaker when I go to Carti next week.

Is it ok to place mushrooms to a FOWLR setup? Mushroom corals, from what I read, they prefer low lighting conditions and are very hardy and easy to keep. I like to keep some to add some color to the tank :)

If ever na lucky ako magkaroon ng sea fan sa LR ko, is it ok to keep it in the tank or to take it out?

kung may kahit anong livestock ka na hindi fish, then it is not considered as FOWLR anymore.. FOWLR is Fish ONLY with Live Rock.. kung may shrimp ka, then reef na.. others may consider it FOWLR with shrimp.. hehe! but if you add a coral or an anemone (for those na gusto ng nemo set-up) then it is not a fowlr tank anymore, reef na yun..

actually i find it easier to keep corals than fish.. :D especially actinos and rics.. leathers are also very easy.. its better to plan it to what you really want kasi in the long run, kung papalit palit ka ng idea, mas magiging mahal yung tank mo..

Cycling Day 1:

My FTS:
Image

Went to Cartimar today and bought the essentials so that I can start cycling my tank. I followed obet_carlos' advice and go skimmerless.

1. Resun SP-2000 Wave Maker -P330.00 bargain price :D
2. Jebo 501 nano HOB (Masyadong malakas daw yung 502 for a 5g) -P200.00 bargain na kase last na
ito sa previous batch. The new batch sells na for P270.00 :?
3. Thermometer/Hydrometer -P75.00
4. 2kgs Live Rock (from DLBD) - P30.00 per piece
5. 2kgs Live sand - P20.00 per kilo
6. 5g NSW (from DLBD) - P65.00

I'll gradually change the water from DLBD to the one sold by Fish Depot.

looking good so far.. since beginner ka pa lang, 1 fish would do.. as your tank gets bigger, your community gets bigger.. try to keep up with WCs as well..
corals die faster than fish when even one of your parameters is off the charts..

Sabi kasi sa akin sa Fish Depot masyadong malakas ang water flow ang 502 for a 5 gallon and since fine sand ang gamit ko, nagagalaw yung sand. but so far so good second day pa alng, andami nakuhang dumi ang HOB ko.

Cycling Day 4

Gave the tank 4 days for a light cycle using LR. Did a minor top-off and placed a small piece of fish in the tank to kick start the cycle.

No lights yet :?
Will be doing a 10% water change on Monday and probably on Friday kase will be off for a vacation next weekend :)
