What's the minimum equipment to start Cycling

Postby cuteios » Thu Jul 01, 2010 4:05 pm

Hi Gang,

I'm just itching to start a new nano tank after oh so many years. Unfortunately I have to start from scratch. I've got a list of stuff I plan to get for starters. Would it be alright to begin cycling without a light yet? I'm itching to do a DIY CLF lighting solution but want to get the tank started on its merry cycle. Do you think i'll be ok with just the following things:

Standard 5.5G glass tank
4Kg of live rock
4kg Sand
60gph HOB

I'm looking at a regular all glass tank from cartimar, so it doesn't have lights yet. The good news is I found cheap electronic ballasts from power lights at the mall, they have a 54W capacity so I'm thinking I could string two CFL bulbs with for each ballasts. That would let me setup a 2 x 18W system going which should be ok for starters.
