Medication help please

Postby mjcm » Sat Oct 30, 2010 10:07 am

Sirs, just want to know what is the difference in the functions of API Melafix, API Melafix Marine and API Pimafix. Is it okay to dose API Melafix? My tank is most likely infected by a bacterial than a fungal since the fish died shows the following symptoms: red sores (sometimes turn to black), whitish outer body, no fin/tail rotting, loss of diet, emaciation (extreme thinness), skin darkening upon death/near death.

Melafix marine sir is made for marine use only, it treats many bacterial infections and coral tissue necrosis sir. It may dose to your main tank or as use for coral dips. it can also use for treating fungal infections.
Pimafix is for treating fungal infections and both internal and external bacterial infections. Will not adversely affect the biological filter, alter the pH, or discolor water. It is safe for reef aquariums and live plants. You can use it in fresh or salt water. PimaFix has been formulated to work in combination with Melafix to enhance effectiveness against fish diseases.
Melafix (1% concentration) by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals is labeled as an all natural botanical antibacterial remedy made from tea tree extract. It contains melaleuca.
Melafix is a breakthrough antibacterial remedy that uses a derivitive of the Melaleuca (Tea Tree) to treat bacterial infections in fresh and saltwater fish. Rapidly repairs damaged fins, heals open wounds and ulcers, stops mouth fungus, and treats fin and tail rot. Safe for reef aquariums and live plants. Causes rapid growth of new fins and tissue in as little as 4 days of treatment. Safe for scaleless fish, fry, and invertebrates. Will not affect pH, stain the water, or harm the biological filter.
Melafix Features:
Heals open wounds and ulcers
Rapidly restores damaged fins
Stops mouth fungus (Flavobacterium, formerly a.k.a. Flexibacter)
Treats fin and tail rot
Treats eye clouding
Does not affect pH
Safe for snails and other invertebrates in fresh and salt water
Will not harm the biological filter
Dosing your tank with melafix is good, you can also use Melafix marine because it is used mainly for marine tanks instead.
I hope these answer your questions sir.

Which should I dose? The symptoms of all my fish that have died include:
Whitish body (but not whitespot disease)
Injuries (sometimes it comes in red sometimes black- dead tissue most likely)
Emaciation (thinness)
loss of appetite
colors become dark (which happened to my sailfin)

Disease Recognitions
Bacterial Infections and Mixed Infections
Whitish body, cloudy eyes and extreme coating of dead cells and mucus. It appears as whitish overcoating because of the destruction of mucous membranes
Spring Virosis and Erythrodermatitis
Open sores and ulcerations persisting up to 14 days upon appearance of symptoms. It leads to open wound with bleeding and destruction of tissues that leads to necrosis this is the coloration of black tissues.
Internal Bacterial Infections
Open bleeding sores near the anal fin, protruding anus, excretion of white mucus and bleeding under the skin, bleeding membranes around mouth and abdominal area
Dropsy
Leads from internal or external bacterial infections resulting in dropsy body or edematous cells. Kidneys can't excrete excessive fluids out of the body so it was deposited in cavities under the scales.
Symptoms are loss of appetite, difficulty of breathing, cloudy eyes, protruding eyes or pop eyes, bloating and lethargy. Highly contagious.
Bacterial Fin and Tail Rot
Fin and tails are starting to destroy. The first day, the fins and tails are forming a transparent coloration in them, second day to third day it spreads and the fourth day it destroy the fins and tails. Infections may include destruction of tail base and fin membranes. You can also see mucous coating and bleeding.
Fungal infections
Floppy like growth in the affected area of the fish, results from injury and stress. Spores are infectious when the temperature is lower.

Treatments
Melafix Marine to treat your inborn marine infections, including tail and fin rot, bacterial infections and mix infections. For overall marine treatments.
Pimafix for your fungal infections, you can also use melafix if you want to treat a general infections. But for this matter, since marine tank is used the API Melafix marine will be the choice.

So i think it is more of a bacterial infection? An addition would be my fish isn't suffering from tail or fin rot.

If your symptoms corresponds to bleeding sores and ulcerations with coating of whitism coats it is bacterial infection. Do you know what is a black ich sir? Darkening of fish sometimes is a result of poor water conditions, it can be also a result of stress and black ich.

Aquarium Pharmaceuticals PimaFix is a natural botanical remedy made from Pimento racemosa oil, providing unique active compounds, which harmoniously work together to attack fish diseases. The active compounds found in Pimenta racemosa not only provide many different modes of action, but also eliminate the possibility of the development of resistant strains of disease-causing organisms. Until now, most anti fungal medications resulted in unsightly water discoloration throughout the course of therapy. PimaFix does not have this disadvantage, providing better viewing of fish during treatment. Treating with PimaFix will not harm the biological filter in freshwater or saltwater aquariums or ponds. PimaFix has no effect on pH. PimaFix is harmless to aquatic plants.
API Melafix Marine is for Rapidly Repairs Damaged Fins,Heals Open Wounds And Ulcers,Stops Mouth Fungus,Treats Fin And Tail Rot
In extreme cases of especially stubborn infections, PimaFix has been designed to work synergistically with MelaFix. Using PimaFix and MelaFix together provides the added benefit of quick tissue regeneration and wound healing.
