Tank Bred Clowns

Postby roland_0313 » Wed Oct 23, 2013 4:24 pm

Hello, new poster here...

I was just wondering if there are any LFS in Manila that sells tank-bred clowns? Nabasa ko kasi, mas maganda raw kung tank-bred kesa yung mga nahuli lang eh.

My tank is 50 gallons with 20 gallon sump, and the plan is to only keep a FOWLR. The cycle is almost complete since my trites reading is already 0.25 yesterday and ammonia is zero, though I will still need to work on the pH level, medyo mababa kasi.

If it's impossible to find a tank-bred clown, where is the best place to go to get the clowns? I live in Paco so Cartimar is the nearest place that I can go to. I hope somebody can help...

Thanks!

Welcome to RP bro! hit and miss ang mga livestock sa carti. sad to say pero ung mga napupunta dyan eh mga napagpiliaan na ng mga exporter and hindi mga tank breed. I'm lucky enough to get some clowns from DLDB that survive up to now. Much better if you post na lang dito sa RP that you are looking for clowns baka may gusto magbenta or pag siniswerte ka ay magpa-adopt pa. You can also try some of our sponsors here (just visit the sponsor section) kung meron sila

gaano katagal ka nag cycle and ways you did it?(shrimp, liverock, etc..) just keep on monitoring your water parameters specially the ammonia levels mo since ito ung very lethal sa fish. since you said na FOWLR lng nman setup mo, i think you don't need to worry sa nitrite, nitrates, phosphates as to compared kaming naka reef setup. try to contact aquareef and fev marine regading sa clowns baka meron sila. as long as conditioned and eating pellets naman na it doesn't matter if tank breed or wild caught siya for sure mabubuhay na un.

naku masyado pa maiksi ung time mo ng cycling baka nag mini cycle lng yan, usually it should be for 2 months and the fastest is 1 month. unless gumamit ka ng mga agent na pang expidite ng cycling like biodigest and bioptim pero I won't advice that. mas ok pa din ung natural cycling. it will also be good if you turn off the protein skimmer on the initial stage of cycling. wag ka muna mag lagay ng livestock if it is only your 1st week. keep on monitoring muna. If you had time this coming saturday we will have a meetup at carti, more than 10 na reefers ung magkikita dun. pwede ka namin maturuan ng basics and hopefully mas tumaas survival rate ng ilalagay mo na livestocks.

grafh11 has been breeding clowns for years, though I am not quite sure if he sells the fry.

regarding cycling I would echo mindfreak's suggestion to wait a bit more before putting anything. (though I would leave the skimmer on to remove organics, but that's another topic)

Sure you can speed up the nitrogen cycle, but that is only a small part of a whole.

You can safely say your tank is ready when all parameters are correct, meaning even nitrate and phosphate are zero or at least near zero.

Start slowly, nothing good happens in this hobby when you start too fast. :)
Cheers,
Marty

Thanks seth,

The minimum that I've given it is actually 4 weeks, though I continuously check the water parameters. From what I read, the nitrogen cycle also affects pH so I'd use that as a sign as well. I'm not really in a hurry to get LS into the tank, this is more like looking into options so I'll know where to get good clowns when my tank is finally ready, because honestly, I'm not sure if Cartimar is the safest place to get my LS, though I find Marine Quest to be quite different from the rest of the LFS in there.

MQ is somehow better but if you really want decent fishes, grafh11, direct aquatic or rvs fishworld would be your best bets. :)

How about rotifer? Anybody sell those or is there a particular store in Cartimar that sells those?

The thing is our group of reefers more often go to exporters such as grahf11, those in Gatchalian Subd. in Sucat and RVS Fishworld (haven't been there myself though) rather than pet stores. Lately I have found myself to be skillful enough in identifying strong, fairly healthy fish in Cartimar, and yes, I search within Aqualand, where fish are cramped like OMG. Got two out of my five wrasses there and both survived, eating well today. That wouldn't be advisable to newbies so better go to more trusted sources. If you have the budget for fish though try Tropical Brew in Del Monte Ave., Q.C. Got my leopard wrasse there, very healthy and eating at the store

Hope this helps. Good luck!
