Simple, Easy, Cheap DIY ATO

Postby yose_ » Thu Apr 03, 2014 11:31 pm

Just wanna share my DIY ATO.

Pros:
1.) Very easy to do
2.) Cheap!
3.) It works!

Cons:
1.) Not failsafe - pwede matabig ng pets, bata, etc.Just place it at the back or in an area with no traffic.
2.) Volume is limited by the size of the 5-gallon PET bottle

Materials:
1.) Airline tubing
2.) 5-gallon PET water bottle (round)
3.) Round, coverless, plastic (and new!) trash can. Diameter must be around 2 inches smaller that diameter of bottle. Too wide and the bottle might slide in, too narrow and the setup might easily topple down.

Procedure:
1.) Drill two holes at the upper part of the trash can. Size of the hole must be the same size as the airline tubing. One hole for the airline tubing, the other one to prevent vacuum.
2.) Insert the tubing in one of the holes until the tip touches the bottom of the trash can
3.) Open water bottle, flip it over the trash can as you would when loading the bottle in a dispenser.
4.) Siphon (read: higupin) the tubing so that water will fill the hose.
5.) Place the other end of the tubing in your sump. The tip must touch the bottom as well.
Important: Adjust the height of your new ATO (trash can + bottle) so that the water level inside the trash can is the same as the minimum water level in your sump.

How it works:
When the water in your sump evaporates and the level decreases, the difference in pressure will push the water from the trash can to your sump. It is important to ensure that the water level inside the trash can is higher than the level that you want to maintain in your sump so that the flow is always from trash can to sump.

Nevermind the weighing scale, I only used it to adjust the water level inside the trash can.
The more you learn, the more you realize how much you don't know.
