Anthony... for Nikon, go with D80 and up... the D300 does not accept all Nikon lenses and actually doesnt have good reviews. An alternative, and good cost is the Canon 450D. The 500D is slightly more expensive but has video.

anybody tried using the olympus 550sw? ive looked at the olympus 1030sw but it is too expensive for me at the moment

im looking over it, price is really nice considering that its a waterproof camera, but how about its other features?

for one afaik it doesnt have any image stabilization feature. can this be a problem when taking pictures underwater especially when i cant really be stable?

why dont you try Panasonic's Lumix LX3? Ive chanced up with a PiPho member (Larry) here in the US a year ago, a camera addict I could tell from the amount of camera he brought with him... one of them is the LX3 ... he told me that the LX3 is comparable to an entry level DSLR camera. I take his word for it.

im looking for an underwater camera i already have an ixus for my everyday point and shoot but yup the lumix really is a very nice camera.

IMO, since newbie ka pa lang nman, maganda siguro if you go with the kit.
the D90, afaik, comes with the 18-105mm if am not mistaken. ok na sya for an all around walkaround lens [pero the best for me is the 18-200mm, pricey nga lang], combo na sya ng semi wide to zoom. then as you go along and hone or define your shooting style, that'll be the time when you can decide what lens to get that suits you. iba iba kase ang need depende sa kung anong klaseng subject and style of photos you want to take.

I agree with phantom. For a beginner kit lens talaga muna. Maeenjoy mo na yun. Kung bitin ka pwede ka mag 70-200 na mas mura. Down side mag papalit palit ka pa ng lens. Kung Kaya ang 18-200 mas ok. Tapos bili ka ng pang low light na lens ung 50mm 1.4 or ung 1.8
