For a waterfall scrubber, you clean the acrylic when you clean the screen. Yes the growth on the acrylic will slow it down, so it does need to be cleaned.

Hi santa monica,
Just wondering if I can use regular shop florescent to light my scrubber as they are much cheaper than specialized flourescent?

Any type, just use enough watts, reflectors, and make sure they are 2700k or 3000k which are "warm" or "soft".

Hello again sm
Will too much heat from the light hamper the growth of the algae?

Heat makes algae grow better.

660nm red. Blue might help but I don't use it.

If the matting is the green stuff, and it is growing brown algae, then the light is not strong enough.
Direct sunlight will work if at least 6 hours.
