Fire

Postby Fugu » Sat Aug 20, 2005 1:03 pm

Had a little fire in my basement. One of my ballasts had a short circuit and subsequent fire and melted the sockets of both the ballast and the fixture. Good thing I was at home when this happened!

Had a replacement hood ordered and running within a day. Added T5s and moonlight and a new annod hood. Doing more tank/sump renovations and equipment upgrades.

good thing you were in the house sir. was it a splash from saltwater that caused the short circuit?

It was either poor German manufacturing or I was sold an Aquamedic clone?

Somone just told me that his XM overdrives his ballasts to the point it ges too hot? But my ballast is already overdrivng the bulbs, pushing almost 400 watts on my HQI. I may switch to Icecaps?

Wow. You got lucky there being home and all. Is your tank GFI protected?

Yes, I have a ground fault circuit interruptor. The fire started between the socket for the light fixture and the ballast. So I know it did not get wet, besides, my ballast is way above and away from anything remotely wet.

I see. Anyways, I heard that Icecap ballast sometimes has problems with XM de for some reason. Se is fine. Plus your par is gonna drop waaay down if you switch to electronic ballast. Might wanna go with a lower kelvin lamps. I hear the Phoenix 14k's are awesome. Ill probably switch to 250s here by the end of the year. Ill also do electronic ballast but I think Ill go with the EVC brand. I hear good things about them too.
